Understanding Particulate Matter (PM 2.5) aka The Silent Killer
What is PM2.5 ?
It is a very small microscopic particle—2.5 microns in width and almost 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. When air pollution levels are high, these particles form a haze in the sky and easily making their way into our respiratory system and into our lungs.
The Silent Killer
Also known as the silent killer, it’s only in the last 10 years that we have begun to unravel what PM2.5 is—where it comes from and the eventual long-term health impacts our lungs and heart.
Exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution was estimated by WHO to cause about 7 million deaths in 2012, raising awareness of the scourge of pollution on a global scale. New evidence is also emerging on pollution’s debilitating impact on economies.
Measuring the concentration of PM2.5 in our living environment such as homes and offices, and understanding the source is important to ensure a healthy living environment, not just for ourselves but also for our loved ones.
Health experts know that there is no substitute for ground-level monitoring, and on-site inspection of PM2.5 is still the best way to detect if these particles are truly inside your home.
